If you are looking for a fun way to spend some time outdoors this summer, look no further than Flaming Gorge. Known as the most scenic trophy trout destination on the planet, Flaming Gorge has more than merely fishing opportunities. This scenic playground has an amazing variety of trails, hundreds of camping opportunities, rafting, boating and much more.

Flaming Gorge Country has some of the best fishing opportunities in the world thanks to its incredibly diverse fisheries. It is considered the “most scenic trophy trout destination around” for good reason. The 91 mile long reservoir is where two world records for brown trout and multiple Utah and Wyoming state fishing records were set. The fabled Green River, as it re-emerges from Flaming Gorge Dam,  is widely lauded as one of the best tailwater fly fishing destinations in the west, thanks to its upper sections which boast an amazing 13,000 fish per mile. You will find hundreds of waters to fish in the surrounding Ashley National Forest. Head on out to the area’s pristine high mountain streams and lakes for some fast and furious opportunities.

Floating the Green

If you want to cool off in the water, Flaming Gorge has plenty of opportunities for refreshment. The #1 family adventure is enjoying the crystal clear waters of the Green River. Here rafting adventures range from mild to wild whitewater.  Keep an eye peeled and you might spot some of the area’s famous wildlife like soaring Osprey, river otters and bighorn sheep. The 7 mile section of the Green River from Flaming Gorge Dam to Little Hole is perfect for DIY rafting adventurers. While Flaming Gorge offers many expertly guided tours, non-linear adventures experienced by families are often much more memorable. This section has occasional mild rapids that helps to create some truly awe inspiring rafting trips. You can bring your own raft or rent one from a local outfitter. Kayaks and dory boats are also available. Bring along a picnic lunch, your camera and other sundries for a fun day-long experience on the water.

Camping and Boating

Flaming Gorge is also the perfect place to go camping with the family or friends. The area has unlimited camping opportunities with over 600 developed campsites. Flaming Gorge also has special camping spaces like the lake’s boat-only campgrounds. Overall, the lake’s waters stretch for a glorious 91 miles so visitors have the opportunity to boat comfortably without interference from other fun-seekers.

Dowd Mountain

Take to the inspiring single and double track trails of Dowd Mountain and you will be inundated with amazing scenery, diverse wildlife and captivating natural scents. The trail follows a string of blue diamonds through towering pine forests and open meadows.  Follow the Dowd Mountain trail loop and you will find that it leads to a remarkable viewpoint of Flaming Gorge. The trail is used by both hikers and mountain bikers. Locals agree that it is Flaming Gorge’s top mountain biking trail.
